Because I teach 2 classes of math, both classes are on a ring and I use different color cards for each class.

Back to School Activities

On the first day of school, I pass around a roll of toilet tissue. I have each student's name and picture on a 3x5" index card on a ring. With third graders, this can sometimes take a while.

This discussion helps the kids get to know me as a person. When the writing is complete, allow time for sharing. Scholastic Teachables has some dandies — from a reader's theater play that brings a new class together to seating cards with sharable jokes — that are ready to print and run with.

Each group is assigned a different chapter. A circle within a circle. Have each person join right hands with another person in the group, but it has to be someone who is NOT standing immediately to the left or right. Have students assign a positive or negative value to each event based on their feelings about it.

My reading activity is to have them look through their reader and find a story that interests them and jot down the title and a reason or two why they feel this way. Another way to make the activity more rigorous is to require students to write each entry in rhyme or meter. The homework I assign for the first week of school is for the kids to go home and ask their parents, discuss with them or think about how they use reading, math, language, science, and S.

Students share information about themselves using the sentence stems their left and right pointer fingers are closest to. I give them a license plate template and tell them that they need to create a personal plate that best describes an important aspect of their character.

Happy events like "meeting a new friend" would have a high number, and sad events like "having to leave a sibling at home" would have a lower number. We do this together rather than me just telling them and posting them. The next student begins the cycle again until everyone has had a turn.

This activity can also be done with first or names in alphabetical order, height, shoe size, etc. And the whole class learns more about what their classmates really think about things.

This is a great "ice-breaker" and the students get a laugh out of it! I just went to an inservice that did an interesting thing in the beginning. Beach Ball Introductions Students sit in a circle and toss a ball to a classmate in the circle.
